My Failed Attempts at Berry Picking

On Sunday, Jamie, Melissa and I took a circuitous drive to Sauvie Island. We intended to go berry picking. I intended to make blackberry jam. In fact, with these intentions in mind, I promised many, many friends a jar of blackberry jam.

Disappointment. Bad driving. Laziness. All rolled into one. No blackberries or berry picking. No blackberry jam. I did, however, grab freshly harvested veggies and fruit at a fruit stand.

And I had an amazing rootbeer float. Success?

Tomorrow, I will celebrate my dear friend's birthday, in Washington Park, with a picnic, with cupcakes topped with the requisite celebratory flair, and with finger-food galore (including honey-soaked lemons for lemonade), while watching, in a lazy summer daze, Vicky Christina Barcelona.

I will wear this dress because I love racerbacks, and I love silk Margarita Saplala dresses. I must remember to bring a towel.

I will wear these shoes, because Rachel Comey makes great shoes. And, I love tassels.

Happy Feet (Or: My Obsession with Tassels)

About two years ago, I fell in love--the kind of head-over-heels love--for a pair of wooden soled Rachel Comeys with shingle detailing. I was obsessed! I wanted them in both the cream color and tan brown. I wanted the wedge version and the heel version. I wanted them all. Unfortunately, so did everyone else: I managed to land only one pair, which my friends dubbed as my "shingle shoes." Oh, are they great!

When I peered at the linesheet for Spring/Summer 2009, I found something as adorable as those shingle shoes of seasons past. My heart stopped! Tassels! And could I call that a pseudo-shingle? We have two styles to choose from because, if you're anything like me, you will want both versions. Just don't dawdle as long as I did.

(By the way, I must say that the construction on the Rachel Comey shoes has become increasingly better with each subsequent season. This season's shoes are truly special.)

I thought we sold out of this dress, but, as it turns out, there is ONE left in a size Medium. My sister owns this dress and wore it during her recent visit to Portland! It has a super flattering fit and runs true to size. I'll post it back on the site this week! Who will be the lucky girl?

Each February in Portland is met with flocks of anticipation-filled people waiting in the cold, usually entrenched in a book/periodical/other ostensibly high-brow reading material, lined up outside the old Portland Broadway Theatre, Arlene Schnitzer Hall or Portland Art Museum. The Portland International Film Festival is in town!

This year, I'm going with friend and foreign film aficionado Sue who, every year, maps out in meticulous fashion which films will and will likely not be available stateside. (By the way, Sue is the embodiment of mother-hen chic. Though not entirely an inaccurate caricature of her, I always imagine Sue with baguette in hand, crunch crunch, shawl draped dramatically around her shoulders. Maybe she's always cold? But I think in her previous life she was a French woman. ha.)

There are so many films from which to choose, and even random jaunts to the theatre at this time produce entertaining finds. My current list of go-sees:

Adjusting to the disparate climate and time zones of three countries, back and forth, within a period of a few days has been tiring, even overwhelming at times. One thing that brings me a small smile: this random picture of a chihuahua with a toupee. Being held captive by a 13-year-old curmudgeon chihuahua myself, I realize I find more delight in this picture than the average person. Good night.

Growing up, I despised the white stark walls of my room. I begged my parents to let me paint the walls any vivid color. They said no. (Later, when I would visit home during undergrad, I would find the walls painted burnt crimson. What?) So, I painted everything else and rearranged, rearranged, rearranged my furniture.

Peering through Domino made me happy -- rooms of unabashed color, texture, print, all mismatched, layered on top of, and against, each other. Love.

My traveling shoes are back on, and I have a plane to catch to Hong Kong in a few hours. Do not worry -- the resident male remains at the helm, so shipments will move along as normal.

Hong Kong is the first part of the trip, with my end destination being more tropical. Wearables packed: Mociun Ikat dress, tights, Devotte green Leelo sandals, a few vintage dresses. I'm packing lightly, knowing that I will probably come home with more than with which I left.

I agree with Emily's picks: the IRO Yaffa blouse is a favorite of mine, something I throw on when I'm running out of the house and need to hide my oft-haphazard way of dress. Although its cut reminds me of a casual pullover and it is as comfortable as one, a simple pullover it is not: the silk fish-scale detailing is gorgeous and a perfect counter to the woven blouson sleeves. Speak the word "birthday" and I invariably think of piñatas. I love piñatas. I'm going to engage in the ritual list of resolutions. I doubt the resident male will provide his list, so here's mine (in no particular order):

1. Read for fun, rather than for obligation (I usually have a few fun books open at the same time. I just finished one by Junot Diaz, just picked up the new Jhumpa Lahiri, and plan to re-read the sparkly prose of F. Scott Fitzgerald.)

2. Take public transportation (I live in Portland of all places, land-of-bikes-Portland, or, as my friend Thomas calls it, the "coolest place for public transportation.")

3. Cook, cook, cook (On that note, I have been slightly obsessed with blog 30 Bucks a Week, a blog written by two people living in Brooklyn, NY that documents their budget-friendly attempts to cook delicious veggie (sometimes vegan) meals on a budget of, err, $30 a week. Yay for vegetarian polenta recipes!)

4. Be fearless/take more chances/allow myself to be young and stupid (We only have that excuse for so long.)

5. Ride a bike more often (Yes, I said "more often" because I actually rode my bike last month--when it snowed. It was a little exhausting.)

December was a snowy blur for us. Literally, it snowed so much that the city was crippled for about a week and a half. The airports cancelled flights, people lived in airports, and others were holed up. One day, we bravely left the confines of our home and walked around. I could not believe how gorgeous the city was. Despite my one too many falls on icy sidewalks, I have to say this is one of our best winters yet.

I'm engaging in my usual lazy packing blues. In a few hours, we depart to Los Angeles for Thanksgiving festivities, where, among family and friends, I will happily over-satiate myself on my mother's and my grandmother's cooking.

Today, Joseph said to me, "The weather is horrible. It is raining--absolutely pouring--in LA. Bring a rain jacket and comfy clothes." Me afraid of the rain? I think not. What to pack? Despite Californian gripes about the "bad" weather, a few raindrops will not deter me from taking advantage of wearing less layers than I will probably be required to wear within the next 5 months in Portland. Plus, I do not own a rainslicker or rain jacket. Please.

What to pack? I think it is time I wore this Charlotte Ronson skirt. Sans tights. With booties. A leather jacket. A comfy T-shirt or equivalent top. à la Karla (below):

On random drives especially to small towns, I cannot pass up a used bookstore. Cannot. Will not. This is why Portland and even Vancouver, WA can be dangerous. In fact, some of my favorites are a product of my horrible sense of direction and propensity to drive aimlessly.

Weekend Wrapup

My weekend in Los Angeles was too short. It was 80+ degrees this weekend, and the sun shone unapologetically. I sipped one of my favorite chai teas, found a new favorite vegetarian restaurant, and spent some time with my two sisters and a dear friend. And, upon my return from Los Angeles, I realized that Fall--sometimes, it feels like Winter--appeared in Portland, coating the ground in fallen yellow leaves.

Below, some images from my weekend. Actually, most of the images are pictures of my sister, Jennifer, in her two favorite IRO dresses. I threw in a shot of Jaclyn in a thrift shop blouse from years past (that I should have stolen from her) because, well, I wanted to.

I know it seems counterintuitive to want a slinky, silk chiffon dress/tunic in the colder months, but I couldn't help myself. I'm a fan of pretty draping and slate colors. And so, when faced with this floaty IRO top as an option, I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Why not?" Can you picture it over your blackest skinniest jeans, blackest booties, jacket (maybe, a cardi for the second layer), and scarf?

I think this write up echoes some of our clients' sentiments--you know, those of you who love the clog oxford (and secretly stare), but can't believe that you can covet a clog so much. Give in. Rachel Comey has that effect on all of us.

Mociun Prints are In

Mociun’s Fall collection, entitled, “ The Naming Ceremony,” is my favorite yet.

We have two very different Caitlin Mociun silhouettes to offer you this season. The first is the much coveted tie-front dress in the beautiful Ikat print. The material is substantial –no flimsy dress here— so one can imagine how great it would be for the forthcoming chilly months: flat moccasins or clog oxfords, opaque wool tights, a scarf and jacket—voila! A few smartypants customers purchased the dress on pre-order (yay for them, but not for us), so we only have one left in stock, a size small. I wonder who the lucky girl will be.

The second dress is the amulet cut in the “fake bead” print. Unlike its tie-front counterpart (which is more relaxed in fit and style), this dress is more dramatic. It is fitted in all the right places and has a plunging neckline, pleated shoulders and a high neck. If you’re wondering how you will squeeze yourself into this dress, do not worry –it has a zipper back. And despite its fitted cut, it remains flattering and forgiving. My Fall Uniform, Part 1

In an earlier post, I predicted what the resident male's likely Fall uniform would be, which made me think about my own. Honestly, as the weather transitions from gorgeous Indian summers to rain-drenched autumn days, I go through a period of throwing on, even more haphazardly than usual, anything that is comfortable and easy--without any thought or care. My best friends become my opaque tights and sweater tops, which are great for layering. I reluctantly dig my boots out of hibernation.

When I glimpsed this silk print by IRO, I knew I had found one of my Fall staple: printed silk charmeuse and knit wool sleeves = perfect. This is another point in the road where my rational was nothing more than self interest: I couldn't decide which would be better, the blouse or the dress. Rather than decide between the two, I simply chose both.

The cut of this 100% silk blouse and dress is 100% ease, no-fuss slouchy chic. I like the sleeves, which are just relaxed as the cut. BUT the material and print is gorgeous and the range in textures is so interesting. So, while you and I may throw it on with that devil-may-care type of ease, the look remains somewhat put together.

Reversible, no? I think that works.

I look forward to literally throwing on this dress with tights and my Devotte boots ... and a jacket.

Of Bow Ties, Stodginess and Fall Uniforms

I love this image, the juxtaposition of the black suit and bow tie with perfectly weathered lace up boots in a warm cognac shade. It works so well. I always appreciated it when my profs wore bow ties with their suits or jackets. For some reason, the bow tie-wearing types didn't seem as stodgy as the rest.

Also, whether the resident male at SOTTO realizes it or not, this will likely be his Fall uniform. He has always displayed a penchant for collecting stodgy jackets. Somehow, they found their way to a box in the garage, but I will dig them out soon enough. I have to. The temperature in Portland has taken a precipitous dip. Fall is undeniably here to stay.

A Printed Matter

Part of the lure of designers like Rachel Comey and Mociun are their beautiful prints. This season, I'm a little more than overwhelmed by all the beautiful prints at hand. I can hardly decide what to keep for myself, and, much to my chagrin, many of you have beat me to it.

Here, a few of my favorite prints in stock--there are more to come, including printed dresses by Caitlin Mociun.

Rachel Comey. Eye on You.

It is futile to resist a witty print on an equally clever silk dress. With pockets, cuffed dolman sleeves, and a reversible cut (as shown below), this dress is effortlessly chic with tights and flat boots as it is bare with heels. A fitted turtleneck underneath would also work for chillier days. Hits above the knee.

We have only one left in a size X-Small.

UPDATE: We are officially SOLD OUT of this dress.

Worn "backwards," it shows off a beautiful neckline.

True to form, we paired it with our newest Rachel Comey belt.

Eskell. Fleur Print.

Rather than make a decision about which variation of this print I should get, I bought most of them. Also in silk and available in a dress or top, Eskell's fleur print is more subtle than the Rachel Comey print, but no less gorgeous--nor versatile.

I'm taken with all the details of this dress--the gathered bust, elastic empire waist (that nips in just at the right place), puffed sleeves, ruffle neckline, keyhole back, and button closure sleeves. I like it both with the fabric belt or with a more substantial substitute, like the Rachel Comey belt in whiskey. I imagine I'll wear this with a thick cardigan, tights, and a pair of Rachel Comey clog oxfords. Hits above the knee.

The top version of the dress, also in white fleur print, shares some of the same dramatic details, although slightly varied: high neck with a slight ruffle, elastic empire waist, 3/4 sleeves. It looks amazing tucked into a pair of high-waisted slouchy trousers.

With its button down front, tie waist, folded edge neckline, and backpleats, the Shauna silk blouse, in the black fleur print, has all the markings of a timeless blouse you'll tuck away in your closet for "special" occasions, but the ease of something you'd literally throw on during weekends of leisure.

Charlotte Ronson makes another beautiful silk dress--mini, this time--with an origami neckline, pockets, and a nipped in waist.

Although, for fear of acknowledging that sunshine-filled days are soon coming to an end, I have not yet donned my autumn boots, I'm at a point where a seasonal change is welcome. I crave my opaque tights, turtlenecks (worn under all my warm weather dresses), and brisk autumn mornings. I adore chunky knits. And, layers, lots of comfy layers.

Devotte FW '08, Part IV: My Other Brown Boot

My sister, Jennifer, knows a thing or two about collecting quality, beautifully constructed boots. She has a collection of vintage boots that anyone would envy. In fact, when I visit her apartment in Los Angeles, I deliberately take the time to troll through the rooms, looking for discarded treasures: a pair of vintage wedges in the perfect golden-beige shade, or possibly a pair of her boots. How a girl in constant 90 degree weather could, or would need to, own that many beautiful pairs of boots is presently beyond my grasp.

The I. Know boot is a worthy rival to my sister's collection. Frankly, I hesitated in putting up these pictures of the I. Know. They don't do this boot justice; the details on this boot--button and pintuck detailing on the back of the calf--make this timeless piece special. The lines of this boot are sleek and fluid. The rich rustic brown leather has the kind of slight variation that you can tell will weather beautifully with time; the heel--a little over two inches--elongates, but keeps the shoe functional, which, by the way, is Nancy Kim's signature, as she designs for the women of NYC.

Don't dawdle too long, as I have a feeling Jennifer is going to want a pair for her collection.

Nostalgia

On my first trip to Italy, I stayed in a hostel in one of those small fishing villages on the Ligurian coast. The hostel was run by three brothers and the wife of one of the brothers, an American woman who, like many others, had trekked through Italy, fallen in love, and decided to stay. I recall the horrible walk up, up, up from the train station. The weight of my backpack --admittedly full of too much guilty shopping conquests--made the sludge up the hill to the hostel door hot, unbearably arduous, tiresome.

On that particular visit, I met two women, each of whom, like myself, was traveling alone. One was an opera-singer in training. She lived in San Francisco and waited tables part-time in what I was told was a luxe-Italian establishment in the Bay. The other was a marine biologist, an avid kayaker, who lived, for a majority of the year, on an island.

Both women were considerably more mature than me both in age and life (I was, after all, only twenty-one and as bright-eyed as one could be), and, but for the fact that our lives' overlapped for a window of one day, in the same country far away from our homes, in the same small Italian town, in the same hostel, we would probably never have spoken. Somehow, time and opportunity conspired. Over great wine and conversation, we shared an amazing meal--seared in my memory forever--in one of the town's restaurants, where the boisterous owner insisted on serving all of his customers with a phone glued to his ear and what appeared to be a tirade of words coming out of his mouth.

Whenever I recall that meal, that time, that place, a sense of wonderment captures me. I have never been able to express it, not in words and not in the Kodak-throw-away-camera pictures I took on that trip, which I seem to have misplaced since then.

Stumbling across The Cherry Blossom Girl's blog entry about her holiday in Italy brought me back. Her pictures, for me, do the best job of capturing that time. In fact, her blog is full of many many pretty images.

My litany of love for FW '08 Devotte continues, but in a whirwind way--a bowl of Tillamook vanilla ice cream, freshly-picked blackberries, and last night's Project Runway await. I know it is First Thursday in Portland, but I much prefer this option tonight.

In the work lives of many (too many, in fact) of my friends, the black pump takes a dominant stance. While the style lends itself to some classic beauties, the interpretation is often lackluster, boring, and, if I may be completely frank, pure function over form. Boo.

Enter the Mascara in black, your morning friend (or my friends' morning friend) when you're rushing out the door, an endless sea of traffic ahead and naught a second to fret over your footware.

Frivolous ruffles on this serious shoe are SOOOO spot-on. For work or for play.

Devotte FW' 08, Part II: Clever

Devotte. Pur. Grey.

Meet my new Fall staple: the Pur, a killer heel/bootie that makes a decisive nod to the '80s, and remains unapologetically femme, and somehow even a bit classic. The slate grey color is the perfect backdrop for almost anything you can throw at it, which is funny, given the fact that I don't think I presently have a shoe in this color. I still surprise myself. I should not have to (but I will) mention that this is equally pretty with your thick tights in the autumn and winter, as it is with bare legs for spring and summer.

(I should note as well that soon after unpacking the Pur, I tried on a pair in my size and engaged in the ritual, "Ooooh! Aahh!" before I was forced to give them back.)

But the absolute best part is the interchangeable design. Each pair comes with two detachable leather bows. You are a clever girl, Nancy Kim.

Devotte FW '08, Part I: Crushed

We are back from our holiday and busily unpacking our Fall shipment of Devotte. We promise to post more pictures of the goodies within the next few days. Here's one for starters.

Devotte. Crushed Lace Up Boots. Rustic Brown.

For years, I have been accused of liking anything that is "granny." Guilty as charged! Staring at my collection of well-loved cardigans, I really can't argue with that accusation, and I doubt I'm alone in that sentiment.

Granny-lovers, brace yourself. The Crushed boot is exactly what we need: a touch of antiquated severity to counter all that is femme, something that we can walk and romp in to our hearts' delight (images of jumping into moutains of fallen autumn leaves comes to mind), something that will weather beautifully with time.

I imagine pairing this with many of my dresses, floral or not, with or without tights; it makes a good summer-to-autumn transition piece. With skinny jeans and a tee, it becomes an easy autumn staple.

Sneak Peek: Rachel Comey Fall Inventory

We know you love Rachel Comey as much as we do. We also know that at times it can be a tad difficult to get your mitts on certain items -- oh, I don't know, a particular honey colored clog instantly comes to mind.

Our Rachel Comey obsession aptly continues:

After taking a gander at Rachel's Fall lineup, we simply could not walk away without one of her prints. So we didn't. In for Fall is the Rachel Comey dip back button dress in the Eye on You nougat print. Gorgeous print, simple shape = easy choice.

The cut-out mocassin booties were also a no-brainer for us. They tie. They have cut-outs. What more can I ask for? Something about this shoe is darling, but not in an overtly saccharine way.

Now, for those of you who missed out on the Ackees and who are still searching for a substantial well-heeled alternative, look no further! Seriously, the Jonens are the next best thing. The color "mud" is more appealing than it sounds: imagine the perfect neutral shade, a mix of gray and brown, that is muted enough to go with everything, yet isn't a bore of a color. I think it would make a great counterpoint to most brilliantly bright items. I don't know about you, but I wear my Ackees with almost everything.

As usual, sizing is limited on all items. We take pre-orders!!!

Autumn

Summer is slowly fading away, dissolving into a faint memory, an afterthought.

Just yesterday, as the resident male and I drove to have brunch at Screendoor (yummy yum yum southern cooking with numerous vegetarian options), a single yellow leaf fell onto the car. I screamed, "No, not yet!"

You are conscious of the slow shift in the seasons; the air is crisper, the rain has returned. Also, as I peer outside my window every morning, staring at the different shades of green on the rolling Sylvan hills (interrupted only by dots with chimneys and different colored roofs), the familiar autumn mist steadily encroaches the sky, threatening to consume the hills.

All this is a reminder that autumn is at the door.

Stockholm Syndrome

I came across this picture and post on the Sart website, entitled, "On the Street .... The Stockholm Look Via Los Angeles."

I scrolled through the readers' comments, where there was a healthy debate as to whether or not this look was sooo uncharacteristic of LA. The majority agreed that it was not characteristic at all.

Really? It has been about five years since the resident male and I lived near--as in, only an hour drive to--or frequented Los Angeles, and we're admittedly a bit out of touch.

Is this so atypically L.A.? Apart from the Hollywood vibe and corresponding dress code (e.g., what others term as the "tanorexics" -- yeah, broad generalization here) that is so often loathed--explictly so by readers of sites like the Sart--this look can't be that foreign there, no? What about in the eclectic, gentrified pockets of Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz? I'm genuinely curious, so please let me know.

In any case, I like it.

Say It Ain't So: Mayle Closes Shop

SYNOPSIS: Much to our lament, designer and dressmaker extraordinaire Jane Mayle has decided to close shop. Say it ain't so. Well, lovelies, it unfortunately is, and somewhere on the streets of Nolita, a chic girl silently mourns, finding herself in a veritable existential crisis.

THE DETAILS: After ten years of garbing women (and presumably others) in perfectly feminine-meets-vintage designs, Mayle announced that her 242 Elizabeth Street shop and the gorgeous line which it houses are coming to a tragic end in February. Gone are the days of delicately executed Mayle silk blouses adorned with just the right touches to make a garment "special"; likewise, my few pairs of Caribbeas--those which I selfishly guard--will never multiply. This is a hard pill to swallow.

Once dubbed the "uniform for cool girls," this line will be missed by many, although I suspect our wallets will flourish as a result. (Yeah, I know we don't carry this line, but trust me, we will miss it. Trust me.)

Said the designer of her decision:

"How I came to this business was all about dreaming and building a wardrobe you would be seduced by. That mystery and remoteness and insouciance have disappeared from fashion in order to accelerate the product. I feel I have just become another cog in that machinery.”

Mayle's announcement to close shop comes at what we hope is the tail end of similar designer announcements.

CONCLUDING REMARKS: Boo hoo.

Carson Hot Springs

On my short list of things to do this summer is a visit to the Carson Hot Springs, which, as I've been told, is only a hop and skip away in neighboring Washington and across the Bridge of the Gods. I am intrigued.

The springs were discovered in 1876 by Isadore St. Martin during a hunting excursion. After claiming the land under Indian Homestead, he ultimately set up shop. Word of the springs spread, and soon people visited in droves.
The old bathhouse is still used and in addition to taking a mineral bath in those old bear claw tubs, you can get a "wrap," which essentially requires being swaddled, cocoon-like, in mineral-drenched cloth or something like that.

A Mid-Summer Hike

Sitting at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, Portland is a veritable hiker's dream. It is green, lush (my friend, Alex, makes fun of my use of that word), and solely within the confines of the city, a hiker can find many trails with which to distract himself/herself.

If, however, you tire of city hikes (as we did this weekend), you can drive 20 miles east to the scenic Columbia Gorge, which alone boasts of hundreds of magnificent day hikes. After you've completed the requisite visit to Multnomah Falls, do yourself a favor and try some of the more obscure trails.

This is our first hike this summer. Shame on us! We've been cooped up a bit and been fairly satisfied with traipsing around the city and trying new restaurants (more on that later).

Stacks of Brown-Papered Books and Teacups

A big cluttered mess of the above-mentioned items--these are some of the things that make up my living space.

Apartmento Magazine isn't a magazine that tells you what you should buy or with what possessions you should live. Otherwise put, it isn't some contrived ploy aimed at equally contrived consumerism. (Whether the ultimate outcome is eventually that consumerism is, however, a discussion for another day.) Rather, it provides a refreshing glimpse of the spaces in which real people exist and, in doing so, gives us an indulgent dose of the idiosyncratic aesthetics that correspond to our lives, whether they be littered tea cups or gorgeous antique furniture.

And that, to me, is always way more interesting. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

This is one of my favorite events in the summer. More low key than the Waterfront Blues Festival and in the very cool--that's gentrification speak for slightly "seedier"--St. John neighborhood, the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is a reminder that summer is the perfect opportunity to lounge lazily in the grass, with ice cream cone in hand and sunshine lingering gingerly over your limbs.

We did exactly that this Sunday, among a small group of people who swayed quietly and in unison to the sweet cacaphony of the trumpet.

The Devotte Shirleys were a welcome companion that day.

Brightly-colored umbrellas dotted the horizon.

One of the best things about going to St. John is crossing the St. John Bridge, one of my favorite bridges in Portland.

Rachel Antonoff Lookbook

There's been a bit of talk about where, if any, the Mooka Kinney line will go, given the girls' confirmed split. Well, Rachel Antonoff's lookbook is out,and the line has been snatched up by a few NYC Über-stores--having a fresh and famous face to model the line shouldn't hurt either.

I'm thinking I need to go, be invited, or throw a garden party in one of these frocks. Ideas are welcome.

Pieces should be out in the fall.

I need to stay away from Etsy. I always find the most random items, many of which, upon laying my eyes on them, convince me that I absolutely cannot live without them.

Like so:

I am overly amused by handlebar mustaches. The owner of one of my favorite coffee shops, which I frequented too often during "grad school" (a euphemism for a less glamorous, more sinister education) had one. If I was a male, I might follow suit. The resident male is equally amused.

Summer Skin

I don't want to jinx this, so let's keep it a secret, between you and me. [whisper] I think I have finally settled into my summer skin. Yes. I think have finally abandoned the looming feeling that the sun will not stay, that a gloomy raincloud is just around the corner, that summer will never fully appear in Portland this year.

It is a wonderful, liberating feeling.

Living in the Pacific NW has ingrained within me an appreciation for winter or seasonal dress, for the ability to meticulously place layer upon layer for warmth without looking like a bundled mess, or, at the very least, an un-chic bundled mess; for the ability to dress irrespective of, and unrestricted by, the rain. (Yes, I wear skirts, dresses, and sandals/peeptoe/non-rainboots/non-sneakers/aka what I consider to be my "normal shoes" during the rainy months. I do so without an umbrella at most times. I even hike, walk outside, etc. when it rains. gasp!)

Before my life in the Pacific NW, I lived for a short time in the tropics and then in perpetual-summer-California. The smell of sunkissed skin is a forged mainstay in my childhood memories. And, with that said, it should come as no suprise to you that I am happiest in the warmer months of the year. These are the months in which I am most in my element, and nothing seems more effortless--or more natural--than throwing on a gossamer dress and a pair of sandals.

As someone graciously informed me yesterday, however, I have about 7 weeks of summer left. That's it!?!?!

Oh, well, I guess I have these to look forward to--adorable pieces from a great French line:

Seriously, I need to learn French. Yes, I have always wanted to learn, but have always believed that learning Spanish made more sense in many, many ways. The last few days, I have been falling, almost Alice-like, into the French blogosphere ... or peering obsessively into it, anyway. I guess all a girl can do is look.

Weekend Show and Tell: PDX Waterfront Blues Festival

As I stated earlier, our plans to head out of state were foiled. I suppose it was all for the best.

This picture is horrible (mental note: must work on photography skills), but here we are en route to the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival.

Somewhere beyond that blurred cluster of sailboats on the right was a grassy spot which we claimed as our own as we listened, next to thousands of sunburned others, to blues ... for charity.

After engaging in more sunbathing than I had planned and then simultaneoulsy realizing that I forgot to bring more sunscreen, we went across the river to snack on sweet crepes and Aranciata.

The end (of a lazy Saturday).

Mooka Kinney Frocks

We hope everyone had an enjoyable, fireworks-filled 4th of July! Our plans to head out of state were foiled. One of us got sick and our jetsetting to Los Angeles/San Diego/Orange County last weekend has left us pooped. So we reluctantly stayed around this weekend, but rather enjoyed ourselves.

We hope to be able to update the website with new merchandise soon. For those of you who missed out on the Mooka Kinney Nevele jumper, we are very sorry. We've got another little number--a mini in a cute tulip print--which should be perfect for warmer weather days:

Much to our chagrin, Rachel has confirmed that the Mooka Kinney gals are splitting up, but we hope to see more from Rachel in the future.
